Scrapbooking Terms & Lingo!


  • ABC Album
    • This is a book where the theme on the first page begins with the letter A, like Apple, Adorable, etc. The next page B and so on. Great for family books or for your little ones. Pick a theme and then just go for it!

  • Acid
    • A chemical substance that makes paper to become brittle and fall apart.

  • Acid-free
    • Paper that doesn't contain acid....what? More technical, paper that has a pH of 7 or higher.

  • Acid Migration
    • Transfering of acid from an acidic material to a less acidic material. It can happen in your scrapbook, so be careful! Use sheet protectors and laminate those other items such as ticket stubs.

  • Adhesives
    • The stuff that keeps it all together. Make certain that the glues you choose are acid-free.

  • Archival Quality Products
    • Items that are both acid-free and lignin-free and will stay that way for years to come!

  • Buffered
    • The process of adding neutral or alkaline substances to material to counteract acids that may form. Archival Quality items sometimes have this process done to them.

  • Chalks
    • Also known as "pastels", used to brighten, shade and enhance die-cuts, punch art, paper piecing, photo frames, letters and much, much more.

  • Circle Cutter
    • A super tool that makes a perfect circle every time no matter the size.

  • Corner Rounder
    • A punch used to take off the corners of paper.

  • Crimper
    • A tool that pinches paper into regular folds that adds dimension to your pages.

  • Cropping
    • To cut out the boring, non-essential parts of a photograph. Don't be afraid to crop. If you didn't crop, you might as well just have a photo album.

  • Die-Cut
    • Precut shapes used to decorate your pages.

  • Journaling
    • Keeping a record of the who, what, when, where and how! One of the most important steps in keeping a scrapbook.

  • Lignin
    • A substance found in wood that binds to cellulose fibers to make the cell wall of plants. In other words, the stuff that makes your paper turn yellow and brown.

  • Neutral
    • Having a pH of 7.

  • Paper Piecing
    • The process of taking a design, making a pattern, cutting it down into smaller sections and then re-assembling it. Very effective and lots of fun. See our page on Paper Piecing!

  • pH Level
    • Acid is measured on a level from 0-14 where 7 is neutral. A substance that has a pH level of 0 is very acidic and one with a pH of 14 is alkaline.

  • Pocket Page
    • A pouch or pocket used to keep memorabilia, like a lock of hair or a favorite pin. Can also be used for holding those special birthday cards. You can also use an envelope or make one yourself.

  • Pop-Up Pages
    • The surprise you get when you open a scrapbook page and the pictures come right at you! Usually done over a two page layout, makes for a very fun page!

  • Power Punch
    • A great tool used with punches that saves your thumb from blisters. Also makes punching a lot easier with less effort.

  • Punch
    • A handheld tool that cuts small to large pre-formed shapes from paper. Like a die cut.

  • Punch Art
    • The art of taking punchies and combining them into other objects. See our page on Punch Art!

  • Scrapbookie
    • A creative person who is determined to make beautiful scrapbooks; An individual who can make scraps into fabulous memory books; A scrapbooking maniac; A preservationist; A bookmaker of sorts.

  • Templates
    • A pattern of various objects that is used as a guide. Great for mounting photo frames or making a cool border on your page.
