Eyelets!

Eyelets are definitely a hot new craze. Perfect for scrapbooking, they make a wonderful embellishment and well worth the extra effort and time. Not only do they come in fabulous colors that span the gamete, but now they come in many styles, like hearts, scallops and ovals.

Keeping an Eye on the Eyelets!
Instructions to use those blame tools for beginners

  1. Place the hole setter right where you want the eyelet to go and lightly tap your hammer. The hole setter is the tool with the opening at the one end of it. It only takes a few taps to make the hole.

  2. Once you have a hole, feed the eyelet through the paper and then quickly turn it over onto the table. OR place the eyelet upside down on the table and then put your project over the eyelet. Much easier this way.

  3. Place the setter, the tool with the smooth end, over the opening of the eyelet and tap it gently with the hammer until the ends begin to bend.

  4. Remove the setter and then tap with the hammer directly until the eyelets flattens down smoothly.

  5. Yipee! You're done!

    Some Helpful Tips!

  • The biggest piece of advice I can recommend for doing eyelets is to WORK SLOWLY!

  • Do not hammer too hard, a little goes a long way.

  • Use a self healing mat when hammering.

  • Make sure you are using a stable surface. Hammering on a table that is wobbley, will only make it much worse. This will make your husband a little upset to say the least and will lead to scrapbook supply restriction.

  • Make sure that what you are doing is exactly what you want. It will be impossible to remove the eyelet later without serious damage to your paper. So really think things through.

  • When using multiple layers, try a dab of glue, so that your papers will not move while putting in the eyelets.

  • Or if you want your many layers to spin, it is best to punch them all separately. The paper tends to split or fold on itself when punching.

  • Be careful when doing vellum paper. Vellum will crease and look tacky if you hit it too hard with the tool and hammer.

  • Use eyelets for corners of borders, edges of pages, on your journaling squares, or just about everywhere.

  • Hang things by craft wire, like deco squares or punch art items.

  • Use as a decoration for die cuts, like eyes for animals.

  • Use to decorate punch art. Like decorating a Christmas tree with ornaments.

  • Feed ribbon, craft fibers, beads & string or other materials through the eyelets.

  • Connect alphabet letters together. Cute!

  • When there is an extra space on your page and needs that little extra something....one word....Eyelets!

  • Don't use a wood block, like a kitchen cutting board or the dining room table when hammering the setter. You will be left with holes. This leads to futher scrapbook supply restriction.

  • If you don't like the hole setter tool, invest in an 1/8 inch hole punch.

  • Buy your own hammer. This way your husband won't come to you every time his hand tools are missing.

  • Don't buy a hammer from your craft store or scrapbooking store. They are much more expensive then the local hardware store.

  • Try looking for eyelets at a sewing shop. They have many metal styles that might suit your fancy.

  • Just have fun!
